Hugo and Campbell Awards Nominations

 

Nippon 2007, the 65th World Science Fiction Convention to be held in Yokohama, Japan, August 30 - September 3, 2007, has released nominations for this year's Hugo Awards, and for the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer. This year's Hugos include for the first time two categories for best editor, short form and long form. The listing here is alphabetical first by title, then by nominee.

Α, Tauntaun με πρόλαβες! Μπήκα για να τα ποσταρω εγω! Τελος πάντων, εγώ από τα υποψήφια δεν εχω διαβασει κανένα, αλλά το Blindsight κυκλοφορεί τσάμπα στο δίκτυο, οπότε μπορεί να κάνω καμία προσπάθεια.

 

προβλέψεις δεν κάνω αλλά το βραβείο Campbell για πρωτοεμφανιζόμενο συγγραφέα θα το πάρει ο Σκοτ Λυντς. Το πρώτο του βιβλίο, το "The Lies of Lock Lamora" είναι, λένε, καταπληκτικό. (εδώ ούτε τι χρώμα έχει το εξώφυλλο δεν ξέρουμε).

Εχω και την εξής απορία: γιατί είναι υποψήφια για το ίδιο βραβείο (το Κάμπελ, ντε) η Ναόμι Νόβικ, που γράφει εδώ και κάτι χρόνια και έχει εκδόσει 3-4 βιβλία;

Μήπως την μπερδεύεις με άλλη; Γιατί όλα τα βιβλία της το 2006 εκδόθηκαν. Λογικά κι αυτή παίζει για το βραβείο γιατί υπάρχει τρομερό hype για τα δρακοβιβλία της.

Εχεις δίκιο, πράγματι έγραψε 3 βιβλία μέσα στο 2006 και το 4ο θα βγει μέσα στο 2007. Μάλλον μπερδεύτηκα με το Εραγκον, που έχει και αυτό αγορακι που βρίσκει δράκο (Καλά- αυτοί οι δράκοι όλο χάνουν τα αυγά τους-γι' αυτό εξαφανίστηκαν ως είδος).

Hype δεν θα πει τίποτα, εδώ ο Πιτερ Τζάκσον τα κάνει ταινία. Που να κερδίσει κιολας!

This year's James Tiptree, Jr. Award for gender-exploring science fiction goes jointly to Shelley Jackson for Half Life and Catherynne M. Valente for The Orphan's Tales: In the Night Garden, with a special recognition to Julie Phillips for her biography James Tiptree, Jr.: The Double Life of Alice B. Sheldon. Awards will be presented May 27, 2007, at WisCon in Madison, Wisconson.

 

Nippon 2007, the 65th World Science Fiction Convention to be held in Yokohama, Japan, has announced a correction to this year's Hugo Awards nominations, adding Pan's Labyrinth to the Dramatic Presentation, Long Form category, and removing Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.

 

Winners of this year's Bram Stoker Awards, announced at last weekend's World Horror Convention in Toronto, are novel Lisey's Story by Stephen King, first novel Ghost Road Blues by Jonathan Maberry, long fiction Dark Harvest by Norman Partridge, short fiction "Tested" by Lisa Morton, anthology Retro Pulp Tales by Joe R. Lansdale and (in a tie) Mondo Zombie by John Skipp, collection Destinations Unknown by Gary A. Braunbeck, nonfiction Final Exits by Michael Largo and (in another tie) Gospel of the Living Dead by Kim Paffenroth, and poetry Shades Fantastic by Bruce Boston. Also presented were the Lifetime Achievement Award, to Thomas Harris, and the Specialty Press Award, to PS Publishing.

The winner of this year's Philip K. Dick Award, for best original paperback published in the US in 2006, is Chris Moriarty's Spin Control , with a special citation given to Elizabeth Bear for Carnival .

Cormac McCarthy's post-apocalyptic novel The Road is winner of this year's Pulitzer Prize for fiction; Ray Bradbury is winner of a special citation, "for his distinguished, prolific and deeply influential career as an unmatched author of science fiction and fantasy."

The winner of this year's James Tiptree, Jr. Award, given to works of SF and fantasy that explore gender roles, is Sarah Hall's The Carhullan Army, published last year in the UK, and just published this year in the US as Daughters of the North.

As previously announced, Michael Moorcock was presented the Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award, and Melisa Michaels and Graham P. Collins were presented with SFWA Service Awards.

 

These are first Nebula Award wins for Michael Chabon and Guillermo del Toro. Nancy Kress has won three times previously, most recently for "The Flowers of Aulit Prison" in 1988; Ted Chiang has also won three times previously, most recently for "Hell is the Absence of God" in 2003 -- in fact, Chiang has now won the Nebula all four times that he has been nominated; and Karen Joy Fowler won the award once before, in 2004 for short story "What I Didn't See".

 

J.K. Rowling has never been nominated for an SFWA Award previously; this is her first win, for this third year of SFWA's Andre Norton Award, created to honor young adult SF/F novels and named in honor of the late SFWA Grand Master.
