10 Unexpected Star Trek References

I was recently on a quarantine compliant jog, jamming to an 80’s playlist when Nena’s “99 Luftballons” (in its original German) came on. I’ve listened to this song countless times; I may be a 90’s kid, but I have a soft spot for 80’s classics. Unsurprisingly, as a Star Trek fan my favorite part of the song is when Nena name checks Captain Kirk. You don’t have to speak a lick of German to hear the shout-out; according to the universal translator, Nena sings “Ninety-nine jet fighters / Each was a great warrior / Regarded themselves as Captain Kirk.”

“99 Luftballons” has one of those great, unexpected Star Trek references; those times when, in the least likely of places, Star Trek shows up.

I’m not talking about an homage or a parody. Galaxy Quest is brilliant, as is the “Where No Fan Has Gone Before” episode of Futurama, but those are direct Star Trek tributes. I’m referring to watching an episode of Mad Men and characters surprisingly start talking about a Trek spec script.

While Star Trek is so ubiquitous that it regularly appears in every corner of pop-culture – from ’80 German rock songs to Emmy award-winning shows and cult films – it’s still a wonderful surprise when a reference is made, particularly to a fan. Below are 10 of my all-time favorite Star Trek references.

10. Fight Club

At one point in David Fincher’s seminal film, Fight Club, Brad Pitt asks Edward Norton who he would fight, if he could fight anybody. Norton – without skipping a beat – answers with Captain Kirk himself, William Shatner. Norton would never had had a chance; if Kirk can beat a Gorn, he can beat Norton.

9. Gilmore Girls

The classic mother-daughter show is full of more pop-cultural references than there are Tribbles. Not only does Kirk, the quirky town do-it-all, share his birthday with William Shatner, but Lorelai’s fourth season boyfriend Digger once justified that hiding their relationship in plain site would backfire by explaining how cloaking technology was problematic across “every incarnation of Star Trek.”

8. “The Chanukah Song”

Adam Sandler’s songs and comedy skits dominated the 90’s. Among his best bits? The part in “The Chanukah Song” when he sings, “You don't need "Deck the Halls" or ‘Jingle Bell Rock’ / Cause you can spin a dreidel with Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock (both Jewish!)” Many a fan, including me, learned of Shatner and Nimoy’s shared cultural heritage because of Sandler.

7. “Intergalactic”

The Beastie Boys – the Kelvin timeline’s favorite “oldies” band – directly reference Trek in their sci-fi themed single, “Intergalactic.” The boys from Brooklyn loudly sing: “Your knees'll start shakin' and your fingers pop / Like a pinch on the neck of Mr. Spock.”

6. Crimson Tide

Tony Scott’s superb submarine thriller, Crimson Tide, includes a scene between Denzel Washington’s Commander Hunter and a junior engineer. Washington motivates the crewman by explaining that their dilemma is akin to any number of classic episodes of Trek where Kirk needs Scotty to once again fix the Enterprise in order to save themselves from Klingons.

5. Back to the Future

This classic, which co-stars Commander Kruge himself, Christopher Lloyd, has a great sequence where Michael J. Fox’s Marty convinces his future father to ask his future mother on a date by dressing up in as hazmat suit and proclaiming, all while doing the Vulcan salute and claiming to be “an extraterrestrial from the planet Vulcan.” Paging Temporal Investigation!

4. South Park

South Park is full of Star Trek references. In a sixth season episode entitled “Fun with Veal,” Cartman masterminds a hostage situation. Among his demands? That Michael Dorn, in full Worf make-up drive his getaway truck and refer to him as Captain. Spoiler alert: he does.

3. Kill Bill

Quentin Tarantino’s love of Star Trek is well known. In fact, he even worked as a script doctor to punch up the pop culture references in one of our earlier entries, Crimson Tide. Among the most overt Star Trek references in his films is the opening of Kill Bill. The movie begins with a title card featuring the old Klingon proverb, once quoted by Khan himself: “Revenge is a dish best served cold.”

2. Spaced

Star Trek Beyond - Simon Pegg
Star Trek Beyond
StarTrek.com

The cult British sitcom, starring and co-written by Kelvin Scotty himself, Simon Pegg, is littered with Star Trek references. Pegg’s character, Tim, even has that iconic Seven of Nine poster in his bedroom. A favorite moment comes when Tim addresses the classic ‘even vs odd number’ Star Trek film debate. Wonder how Pegg feels about that particular debate now that he co-wrote Star Trek Beyond, the 13th film in the series?

1. Wayne’s World

One of my all-time favorite films has several of my all-time favorite references. The movie has one scene where Wayne, wanting to weigh in on a conversation about the differences in champagnes, compares Star Trek to Star Trek: The Next Generation. (“In many ways it's superior but will never be as recognized as the original.”) In another sequence, Garth famously whistles The Original Series theme while both he and Wayne stare off into the vastness of space.

10 Best Star Trek References In Pop Culture

Star Trek is one of the most influential franchises in media. From shout-outs to full-blow parodies, here are 10 of the best references to the series.

Star-Trek-Cropped.jpg.e8d5d645dc9be41094be6465734f5ee4.jpg

It isn't hyperbole to say that Star Trek is one of the most influential science fiction series of all time. Nine television series, thirteen movies, multiple video games, and an entire expanded universe of novels and comics mean there's something for everyone in this franchise. The influence it's had on media as a whole cannot be understated.

With many fans working in the entertainment industry as well as in the general population, it's inevitable that many works will have nods to the iconic series. Here are 10 of the best of them, from minor shout-outs to full-blown parodies.

10. Airplane II

Airplane-2-Cropped.jpg?q=50&fit=crop&w=740&h=370

Airplane! is a master class in the art of comedy. Brilliant visual gags, wince-inducing slapstick, and truly absurd non-sequiturs make it one of the best comedies of all time. Its sequel, Airplane II was serviceable, but couldn't hold a candle to its predecessor. But, its outer space setting does allow for some good Trek gags.

The most obvious is the casting of William Shatner himself as Commander Buck Murdock, played like a less stable Kirk. Probably the best reference is when Murdock looks through his periscope to see the actual Starship Enterprise, cruising through space, much to his confusion.

9. MCU
MCU-Cropped.jpg?q=50&fit=crop&w=740&h=370

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has forever changed the way movies in a franchise interact with each other. It proved that a shared universe could work, and is still the best example in a market full of imitators. Still, it isn't afraid to give a few nods to one of the first shared universes out there.

Take for example in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, when we get a glimpse of Cap's notebook of things he missed during his hibernation and see that Star Trek is on it. When discussing theories on time travel in Endgame the cast brings up Trek's time travel antics. A complete list of references in the MCU would comprise an entire list of its own, but there are plenty to find.

8. Galaxy Quest
Galaxy-quest-Cropped.jpg?q=50&fit=crop&w=740&h=370

Parody can be a tricky business. Ideally, the goal is to poke fun at the source material, but not in a way that comes off as mean spirited toward it and its fans. Galaxy Quest is one of the best parodies of all time because it manages to strike this balance perfectly.

Tim Allen plays a washed-up actor from a Trek-like series living off his past glories. He and his crew find themselves reprising their roles for real to help an alien species avoid extinction at the hands of a genocidal warlord. While quick to point out the series' flaws, it does so in a gentle way. It also makes a point of showing the fans' love for their favorite series in a positive light.

7. Godzilla (1998)
Godzilla-1998-Cropped.jpg?q=50&fit=crop&w=740&h=370

Godzilla is another pop culture icon that came about around the same time as the original Star Trek. The 1998 American remake was looked upon with scorn for many years but has since undergone something of a reassessment. It's by no means a perfect movie, but if one can manage to leave their preconceptions about what a Godzilla flick is supposed to be, it can be enjoyable in its own right.

The film even starts out on the right foot when the titular lizard attacks a Japanese fishing vessel. The boat is called the Kobayashi Maru, which fans will recognize as the unwinnable test scenario introduced in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

6. John Wick
John-Wick-Cropped.jpg?q=50&fit=crop&w=740&h=370

Most people probably wouldn't expect John Wick, of all things, to pay homage to Trek. After all, the film is all about violent gunfights and bloody vengeance instead of exploration and diplomacy. But one of the key visual aspects of the film is actually a major nod to the sci-fi staple.

If we look closely, most of the bad guys are wearing red of some kind. This is a reference to the infamous, "Red Shirts," who would always die on the planet of the week. Here the color helps differentiate Wick from the bad guys during visually busy sequences.

5. Black Mirror
Black-Mirror-Cropped.jpg?q=50&fit=crop&w=740&h=370

Black Mirror is a dystopian science fiction anthology that posits that we're all going killed/enslaved by our technology if we aren't careful. As one might imagine, it tends to be pretty bleak. Despite this, it still manages to have a Trek-themed episode that isn't entirely depressing.

The episode takes place in an advanced video game, aboard the USS Calister. Both the ship and everything else is deliberately styled to pay homage to Star Trek. While the episode is mainly an allegory about cyberbullying, it still manages to be lighter than most episodes of the show.

4. Boston Legal

Boston-Legal-Cropped.jpg?q=50&fit=crop&w=740&h=370

Okay, it should probably be established that just casting William Shatner is not enough to be counted as a Trek reference. If that were an acceptable criteria, this list would just be a partial filmography of the storied actor. But when the show and the man himself constantly go out of their way to remind viewers of his previous work, that's enough.

The most prominent reference is Shatner's character, who continually makes comments about being the captain of his own spaceship, and having been to outer space and met aliens. He even uses a communicator in one episode.

3. Breaking Bad
Breaking-Bad-Cropped.jpg?q=50&fit=crop&w=740&h=370

Breaking Bad, like the above Black Mirror entry is probably not the kind of series that one would expect a deep discussion of Star Trek from. In the season five episode, "Blood Money," however, we get exactly that. While stoned out of their minds, Skinny Pete and Badger start by having an in-depth discussion of the transporters on the show.

This eventually leads to a discussion about an idea Badger had for an episode of the original series. It starts out fairly innocuous with a pie-eating contest, then takes a dark turn to end with a crew member having their organs beamed into space.

2. The IT Crowd
The-IT-Crowd-Cropped.jpg?q=50&fit=crop&w=740&h=370

A show about what most people assume is Trek's primary demographic, nerds, The IT Crowd of course features a reference to Star Trek. Also mentioned are Star Trek-based porn parodies.

In the episode, "Reynholm V Reynholm" the character Douglas Reynholm finds himself in court, where a Trek-themed pornographic movie is played. Naturally, Reynholm fills the role of Captain Kirk, while all the other characters are played by young women. Awkward doesn't even begin to describe it.

1. NCIS
NCIS-Cropped.jpg?q=50&fit=crop&w=740&h=370

For a relatively serious show about military police solving gruesome murders, NCIS has had quite a few references to Star Trek over the years. From DiNozzo giving a Vulcan salute to Mcgee, to Gibbs lamenting that it isn't easy to read a Klingon's facial features, there's plenty for discerning fans to find.

It should be noted that the show's spin-off series, NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS: New Orleans, also get in on the fun quite a bit. Sure seems like the writers are fans. doesn't it?
