πριν από τρία χρόνια, ψάχνοντας στο ίντερνετ πληροφορίες για μερικούς σκιτσογράφου κόμιξ είχα πετύχει την ακόλουθη εικόνα

μη έχοντας ίντερνετ στο σπίτι, δεν το είχα ψάξει παραπάνω, αρκέστηκα στο να ξέρω ότι ο απεικονιζόμενος χαρακτήρας λεγόταν ancient joe, και ότι για κάποιο λόγο ήταν μέσα στο νερό...

 

1 χρόνο μετά, καθώς εξερευνούσα τα second hand comics σε ένα κομιξάδικο πέτυχα το βιβλίο που συγκέντρωνε τα τρία τεύχη της σειράς.

αν και λατρεύω τον don rosa, έχω θεοποιήσει σχεδόν τον spider jerusalem και το transmetropolitan, θεωρώ ασύγκριτη τη mafalda και διαχρονικό το χιούμορ αρκετών στριπ των peanuts, ο ancient joe είναι ξεχωριστή περίπτωση και ένα από τα πραγματικά διαμαντάκια ανάμεσα στα κόμιξ μου.

 

η ιστορία είναι απλή, ο ancient joe είναι ένας άντρας με μυστήριο παρελθόν, και πολλοί πιστεύουν ότι είναι θεός ή αθάνατος. έχοντας εξαπατήσει το διάβολο στο παρελθόν (el diablo), κατάφερε να του αποσπάσει δύο τσουβάλια ασημένια νομίσματα. χρόνια μετά, και όταν πλέον η γυναίκα του έχει πεθάνει, του περνάει από το μυαλό η τρομακτική υποψία ότι ο el diablo μπορεί να έχει παγιδεύσει την ψυχή της αγαπημένης του στην κόλασή του. αποφασίζει, λοιπόν, να εξερευνήσει το θέμα και να σιγουρευτεί ότι η γυναίκα του έχει αναπαυτεί.

 

είναι από τα πιο απλά comics που έχω διαβάσει, και όμως από τα πιο μαγευτικά. δεν υπάρχει σχεδόν ούτε μία κορύφωση με την έννοια που την έχουμε συνηθίσει, αλλά υπάρχει κάτι που σε μαγνητίζει και σε κρατάει αιχμάλωτο των σχεδίων και της ιστορίας.

όπως σχολιάζει ο randy lander εδώ:

Morse's artwork shines in black and white as well, which you can see in every page of Ancient Joe. (...) Morse tells the story in a way that makes it read more like a tale out of folklore than a newly created comic. There's a simple premise at the heart of Ancient Joe that is hard to resist: An immortal trickster conned the devil out of some silver, and now he worries that the devil might seek revenge. This concept is shown in two different stories this issue, the one in which Joe's con game on El Diablo is actually shown and the follow-up story where he tries to seek out the soul of his wife and make sure she is safe from El Diablo's revenge. Both are fascinating, although the first reads more like a tale you might find in a mythology book, while the second is more intimate, inviting the reader to get to know the characters better.

 

Ancient Joe may be an immortal trickster, but he's a down-to-earth guy, and that makes him very approachable. His dialogue, whether it's friendly banter with his friends or his teasing of the kids as he tells them his story, marks him as a nice guy. The biggest chunk of story actually concerns itself less with Joe and his problems and more with how Joe can help a little girl, whose problems turn out to be quite different than they originally appear, and just as odd as the problem that Joe faces.

 

Morse's artwork is phenomenal in the book, which comes as no surprise. His distinctive style conveys the wide-eyed optimism of youth, the exotic but not fantastic city and rural settings where the story takes place and the dichotomy of Joe's weird appearance and everyman attitude. It says a lot about Morse's talent that Joe has expressions in the way he moves, because while his design is certainly eye-catching, it doesn't lend itself easily to facial expressions. Morse also has a command over inks and shadow that is second-to-none, and that serves him well here too.

 

Scott Morse's creations always have a sort of spiritual feeling to them, but they're easy for just about anyone to relate to. Ancient Joe stands alongside his work on Soulwind as visionary and beautiful, and given the way he writes about Joe in the "Sources" text piece at the end, I'm hopeful that we may yet see more of the many available stories for this fascinating character.

 

υπάρχει μια έντονη αίσθηση ότι δεν αποτελεί μία ολοικληρωμένη ιστορία, αλλά ένα απόσπασμα από ένα θρύλο, από μία αφήγηση που δεν ολοκληρώθηκε. δεδομένου ότι η - κατά τρόπον τινά - σειρά αποτελούνταν μονάχα από τρία τεύχη (αν κάποιος ξέρει κάτι παραπάνω, please do tell!), αυτό μάλλον έγινε σκόπιμα και όντως έχει αποτέλεσμα, καθώς δημιουργεί μια πιο έντονη εντύπωση, με τα ίχνη του ancient joe να χάνονται τόσο πριν, όσο και μετά τα γεγονότα που διηγείται η ιστορία αυτή. γιατί , όντως, αυτό δεν είναι παρά μονάχα ένα κεφάλαιο στην ιστορία του ancient joe, ενός ανθρώπου που έχει ζήσει αιώνες...

and just as urban legends go

those locals loved this ancient joe

ol' joe could live alone no more

 

he fell in love and took a wife

attempting to build up a life

 

as years passed by, joe's wife grew gray

though joe aged not a single day

 

so ancient joe outlived his wife

as legends grew around his life

 

his local friends just smile and nod

when asked if ancient joe's a god

 

a god? myth? man? oh, who can know?

well, not a soul but ancient joe...

Υ.Γ. 2 Γενικό σχόλιο/ Έκφραση αγανάκτησης: Αυτούς τους Αμερικάνους δεν μπορώ να τους καταλάβω. Γιατί τα εξώφυλλα να είναι πάντα κλάσης ανώτερα απο τα σχέδια της ιστορίας..?!

Πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα ιστορία (είδα και το The Man from Earth πρόσφατα ), και όμορφο σχέδιο... Θα είναι σίγουρα στα υπόψι μου.

παράληψη δική μου. το σκίτσο αυτό δεν είναι από το κόμικς, αλλά από τα δείγματα δουλειάς ενός άλλου σκιτσογράφου (έψαξα τώρα το site, αλλά δεν κατάφερα να το βρω). τα σκίτσα του κόμικς είναι λίγο πιο απότμα (άγαρμπα θα μπορούσε κανείς να πει, δένοντας περισσότερο και δίνοντας μεγαλύτερη έμφαση στην αφήγηση. σαν τα σχέδια των τριών εξώφυλλων, αλλά στο ασπρόμαυρο. το έβαλα επειδή 1.είναι τέλειο και 2.επειδή αποτέλεσε την αφορμή να μάθω για τον ancient joe και να το αγοράσω όταν το βρήκα.
