Witch

 

Dr. Leiber, I found the transcripts you requested. The case remains open, although it would be impossible to continue this investigation. The case file seems to have been recently opened, and I could not find anything remotely useful. This transcript of a session tape seemed to have been misplaced, and so I was able to forward it to you. The last part troubles me. Make of it what you will.

Session #7

 

Patient: Irene

 

Patient was found roaming the woods in a state of delirium. Her constant talk of the dead coming back to life, her sins to God and her parents, led the police officer to conclude the patient was mentally unstable, and thus was brought to Glasgow Penitentiary for treatment, after evaluation by Dr. Farrows. Her family name remains unknown, since no relatives have contacted the authorities concerning her disappearance. Patient has been treated for close to 2 years. Under this period, no progress has been noted by any of the psychiatrists who have treated the patient.

Notes: Severe post-traumatic stress syndrome, paranoid schizophrenia, multiple personality syndrome, multiple suicide attempts.

Eye movement desensitization, therapeutic hypnosis, molecular medicine, psychosocial genomes have shown no progress. Patient under heavy medication most of the time.

-Static-

 

Dr.Farrows: Good morning Mary. How are you today?

 

Dr.Farrows: I see. But come, Irene, you have to talk to me. I can’t help you if you don’t talk to me. We’ve been over this many times Irene…Don’t make me lose my patience. Tell me, how was your day?

 

Patient: I lied in the corner of a cell all day. How the FUCK do you think my day was?

 

Dr.Farrows: Irene, we have talked about this kind of language before. Do you want to go back to your cell again?

 

Patient: Irene is not here. Irene is gone. Irene is dead, and being eaten by maggots you fucking witch-doctor.

 

Dr.Farrows: Where is she? I want to speak to Irene, please.

 

Patient: Well you fucking cant. She’s dead.

 

Dr.Farrows: Who are you?

 

Patient: None of your fucking business.

 

Dr.Farrows: Okay Jean, you can take her back to her cell now. And double the dosage.

 

Nurse:Yes Dr.Farrows.

 

Patient: NO! Please don’t take me back. I… I’m Irene’s sister. I’m Mary.

 

Dr. Farrows: Mary doesn’t have a sister. You know that. It says so right here on your file. Who are you?

 

Patient: She…she has me. I’m her sister. I’m dead, and you can’t hurt me. I’m the sister she had lost, but now I’m here to protect her. And you can’t fucking have her you pervert so get YOUR FUCKING HANDS OFF ME.

 

 

-Screaming and shuffling can be heard-

 

 

Patient: Don’t fucking tie me. Don’t you fucking dare tie me down you-

 

Dr.Farrows: Hold her down nurse. Just a little more...there. Now. Where were we? Tell me about Irene.

 

Patient: You can’t talk to her. She’s dead.

 

Dr.Farrows: I want to talk to Irene. I’m tired of your badmouthing. Let me talk to her, or you I take you back to your cell. Now.

 

 

-silence-

 

 

 

Dr.Farrows: Nurse, pleas-

 

Patient: YES!

 

Dr.Farrows: Excuse me?

 

Patient: You can talk to her okay? I….I don’t want to go back.

 

Dr.Farrows: Very well then.

 

Dr.Farrows: Irene?

 

Patient: Yes. What…what do you want? Please don’t hurt me. I just want to sleep. Under the willows. Please don’t hurt me. Please-

 

 

Note: Patient shows signs of extreme anxiety.

 

 

Dr.Farrows: Relax Irene. I’m not going to hurt you. I’m just here to help you. To help you out of this.

 

Patient: You can’t. No one can. Because you’re not here. You don’t exist.

 

Dr.Farrows: Irene, listen. I know that you believe in all this. I know you’re in a horrible place. But you must let me help you. I can help you. And I will if you only let me. Let me help you.

 

Patient: You can’t. No one can. I’m all alone in this dark place. All alone, and the maggots keep creeping over me. They try and get into my eyes. They want me to open my eyes but I won’t. I can’t. I won’t.

 

Dr.Farrows: Open your eyes Irene .Tell me what you see. Tell me where you are. Don’t be afraid.

 

Patient: I can’t open them. I have to keep my eyes closed. He said so.

 

 

Note:At this point the patient shows signs of anxiety and appears to be crying

 

 

Dr.Farrows: Who said so Irene? He can’t hurt you. He’s not here now. You can tell me.

 

Patient: No…I can’t. I’m already dead. It doesn’t matter anymore. I lie in my tomb, and the maggots are here too. I only wish I could forget…all this…The river of Lethe ends here…I’ve drunk the lake but I can never forget. Never.

 

Dr.Farrows: Why are you there Irene? Can you tell me that?

 

Patient: I have to stay here. This is my punishment for my sins. I can never forget and I will always be forced to remember my deeds to the end of times.

 

Dr.Farrows: But do you understand why you have to be there? In the darkness? Alone?

 

Patient: Because I have awakened the Forefathers. Because I have broken the holy silence of the tomb, and I must pay for my crimes. I must remain in the dark so that the Forefathers shall remain to life.

 

Dr.Farrows: I don’t understand. This doesn’t make any sense. I don’t think this is leading anywhere. Nurse, please call the guard.

 

Nurse: Yes Dr.Farrows.

 

 

-Silence-

 

 

Dr.Farrows: You have done well child. I’m proud of you.

 

Patient: Father?

 

-Screaming-

Πολύ ατμοσφαιρικό. αν θυμάμαι κάλά (επειδή έγινε ασυναίσθητα) στο πρώτο FUCK άρχισα να διαβάζω απ'έξω την ιστορία και δεν σταμάτησα μέχρι να τελειώσει. Αυτό σημαίνει απόλυτο immersion (εμβύθιση αν το προτιμάτε, αλλά δεν ξέρω αν ισχύει ο όρος στα ελληνικά) στην ιστορία. Δεν κατάλαβα ακριβώς το τέλος και τι εννοούσε με τα τελευταία λόγια της η Irene πέρι

και την απάντηση του γιατρού

(μπορώ όμως να "ακούσω" την αλλαγή στην φωνή του κι αυτό μου φτάνει)

, αλλά φαντάζομαι πως το γεγονός ότι κανείς δεν καταλαβαίνει απ'όσους το άκουσαν και μέσα στην ιστορία, προσδίδει αληθοφάνεια.make of it what you will που λέει και η Lizzy στην αρχή. Μικρό και ευχάριστο μέσα στην πνιγηρή ατμόσφαιρα που βγάζει. Όλοι λατρεύουμε άλλωστε τους psycho ασθενείς σε horror stories.

 

Αν δεν βαριέσαι, διάβασε το man in hell, ένα παλιό κείμενο μου με τρελάδικο, και παρόμοια ατμόσφαιρα. Είναι λίγο μεγαλούτσικο βέβαια..

Ευχαριστώ για την κριτική Ντίνο. Το τέλος δεν έχει κάποια συγκεκριμένη σημασία, απλά υπονοεί ότι η ηρωίδα είναι υπεύθυνη για την αφύπνιση κάποιου αρχαίου Λαβκραφτικου τρόμου και ο πατέρας της, σαν αρχιερέας, της έκανε τρομερά πράγματα που την οδήγησαν στην τρέλα.

Ήταν όντως πολύ ατμοσφαιρική ιστορία. Μου αρέσει και το γεγονός ότι υπάρχουν δυο επίπεδα στην αφήγηση, ένα που ξεκινάει και συζητάνε για την κασέτα και το άλλο που την ακούμε και επιστρέφουμε πίσω στο αρχικό με τις τελευταίες δυο γραμμές.

Αυτό που κατάλαβα είναι ότι πρέπει να υπήρχαν και προηγούμενες κασέτες που δεν είχαν ακούσει οι αρχικοί συνομιλητές, και μάλλον εκεί θα πρέπει η ασθενής να εμφανίζεται άλλοτε ως Irene και άλλοτε ως Mary γι αυτό και το συζητάνε και τώρα σαν κάτι γνωστό.

Δεν καταλάβα ωστόσο κάτι: Αναφέρονται και δυο χρόνια θεραπείας και φαίνεται από τα συμφραζόμενα ότι ο γιατρός έχει μιλήσει πολλές φορές μαζί της. Στο τέλος όμως μένω με την εντύπωση ότι αυτός αποτελεί την ενσάρκωση κάποιου Παλαιού. Ισχύει; Και γιατί τον αναγνωρίζει τη συγκεκριμένη στιγμή η ασθενής; Επειδή της λέει οτι έκανε καλή δουλειά;

 

Και δυο πιο απλές ερωτησεις:

α) Μήπως εκεί που λέει Under this period... πρέπει να λέει During this period...;

 

β) Τα psychosocial genomes είναι κάποιος ψυχιατρικός όρος ή είναι ένα εφέ του συγγραφέα;

Αυτό που συμβαίνει είναι οτι η δεσποινίς έκανε κάποια τρομακτικά πράγματα ώστε να αφυπνίσει κάποιον Μεγάλο Παλαιό. Αυτό της προκάλεσε το ψυχολογικό τραύμα.

Ο πατέρας της τώρα τυχαίνει να είναι ο ιατρός της, αλλά εφόσον είναι εντελώς τρελή, δεν μπορεί να τον αναγνωρίσει. Στο τέλος της λέει μπράβο, γιατί ακολουθεί τις οδηγίες τους: Δεν αναφέρει τίποτα για το cult ή για τον μεγάλο παλαιό.

 

Έπειτα στην αρχή της ιστορίας βλέπουμε οτι κάποιος εξαφάνισε όλα τα υπόλοιπα στοιχεία, εκτός απο αυτήν την κασέτα, η οποία επέζησε γιατί καποιος την έβαλε σε λάθος κουτί.
