Part 1

Heavy rain was falling on the battlefield. Olen tried to move through the muddy trenches as fast as he could manage. He had an urgent message to deliver to Colonel Medius. A lightning cracked in the sky. In the momentary light, a watcher could see a man covered in mud, holding tightly a hat made of an animal’s skin in his head, barely managing to walk, a step at a time, towards the Regimental Headquarters.

Olen was an Imperial Guardsman, part of the 27th Draxian Regiment, currently stationed on Argentia’s second moon. The local militia had rebelled, claiming the system for themselves and several regiments, including the 27th, were sent to recapture it. That was easier said than done, however. The weather had been bad since their arrival and hindered their movements. But tonight all that might change.

He entered the Headquarters and squeezed his hat hard, trying to remove as much water as possible. It was made of an animal called “The Draxian Lycan” and could only be found on Draxos, the Regiment’s homeworld. They used its skin and tail to create hats for all the Guardsmen coming from this planet. It was a millennia old tradition that had all warriors wearing this kind of hat as a token of strength. Olen didn’t feel stronger, but he could certainly enjoy its warmth in cold climates.

The inside of the building was warm and well lit. It was a large room with a table in the middle filled with maps of the region. Around the table stood Colonel Medius with his second-in-command, Major Sarius and several Captains that Olen didn’t know. He approached the table and saluted.

“Trooper Olen, 27th Draxian, 52nd Platoon, 2nd Squad, Sir. I have an urgent message for you, Colonel.”

“Speak up, Guardsman”, said the Colonel, taking his eyes off the maps. He had a large mustache and was smoking a cigar. His light green uniform was in stark contrast with Olen’s uniform, barely able for one to see the green under all this mud. Due to his rank he had no Lycan Hat anymore. For the higher ranked officers they used to cut the hats and attach them to the shoulders of the uniform. In this case the Colonel's shoulders had a piece of fur each, while his left side had also the tail wiggling on his back.

He was the highest ranking officer on the planet, so he was in charge of the whole campaign, even if he belonged to the 27th Draxian. He was posted in the Headquarters so he would be able to direct all the forces.

“The scouts just returned. They say there’s a gap in the Militia’s forces in Rocky Gorge.”

“Gentlemen, this is the opportunity we’ve been waiting for”, said the Colonel turning to the other members of the war council. “Prepare the forces at once. 27th will strike first, supported by the 106th and the 79th. The Basilisks will soften up the enemy before the assault.”

He turned and picked up a vox hailer, connected to vox speakers all over the camp.

Soldiers of the Imperium. We are going to march soon. I expect you to show our enemies what makes the Imperial Guard the Hammer of the Emperor. The Emperor will guide us to victory!”

He put the vox hailer back to its place and turned back to the table, waving Olen to depart. The soldier saluted and departed. Away from the eyes of the higher ups he made the sign of the Aquila, trying to find comfort in reciting the old saying over and over again, “The Emperor Protects”.

Part 2

On the road back to his squad he passed near several small campsites. They were full of muddy Draxian Guardsmen, preparing feverishly for the upcoming assault. He could hear a lot of cursing about the weather and the thought that they had to face the enemy and the mud combined.

The Draxian troops were not used to fighting in such conditions. Draxos was a planet full of forests and diverse wildlife and they were at their best when it came down to forest warfare. In this muddy hell, however, they were just more cannon fodder to feed the Imperial war machine.

When Olen finally arrived to his squad's assigned campsite, he was soaked once more. He saw his comrades preparing for the upcoming assault as best as they could in the given circumstances. Somewhere far, he could hear the rythmic sound of the artillery, bombing the enemy lines. Kill as many of those bastards as you can, he thought.

“That took you long enough”, said the tall man in the middle of the encampment, preparing a rocket launcer. He was Dom, one of the two heavy weapon specialists of the Second Squad. The other, Falen, was at the other side of the camp preparing his plasma gun.

“With this accursed mud, it is nearly impossible to go anywhere”, replied Olen.

“Not that you were slacking off, by any chance...”, said Lant, the medic, from a bit further. He was packing adrenaline shots and first aid kits in his backback.

“Yeah, perhaps he was taking a nap again”, said Dom.

“Blast you both!”, cursed Olen and both his squad mates laughed in unison.

Olen could sleep almost anywhere and he was caught a couple of times hidden somewhere while on duty, sleeping.

“Shut it”, barked Sergeant Rost, coming in the middle of the camp, followed by his second-in-command, Corporal Bann. The laughter was cut immediately. He waved for all the members of the Second Squad to come near him before he started to speak.

“Listen up! I was just briefed by Lieutenant Walf about the operation. As you can hear, the artillery has started hammering the enemy lines, softening them up for our assault. We are supposed to deliver a heavy blow to the rebels and break their lines on Rocky Gorge.”

“How are we supposed to arrive there Sarge?”, asked Zor, another trooper. “We are a long way from the Gorge and the mud will slow us down.”

“The 106th will provide us with Chimera transports and we will storm the Gorge. When we pass it, all three squads of the 52nd Platoon will deploy, along with the other platoons of the 27th, and hold until reinforcements arrive. Understood?”

“Yes, sir!”, all of them cried out in unison.

Just as they got in line, a Chimera bearing the signs of the marks of the 106th Draxian came on their encampment and opened the ramp. They embarked, one after the other, and the ramp closed behind them. The inside of the Chimera was outfited with several lamps which provided a dim light. There were also several slots in each side, so the troopers on board could see outside and fire at the enemy, if they came under attack. The vehicle started moving once more to meet the rest so they could charge in formation.

Suddenly, the vox unit inside the Chimera came to life. On the other side, they could hear the voice of Major Sarius.

“Tonight is the night that we will break the rebels and turn the tide of battle. Lieutenants, keep to the plan until further notice. Sarius out.”

For a couple seconds, the men could hear only static coming out of the machine. Then another voice spoke.

“Men of Draxos. The Emperor's eyes are upon you this night. He expects you to punish these heretics who have turned from his Glorious Light. Do not fail him! Commissar Zachoff out.”

“Who was that?”, asked Trooper Tach when the vox unit fell silent.

“A Commissar, obviously”, Kurt, the fourth trooper of the squad, replied mockingly.

“Ha..ha...”, mocked Tach. “Now a serious answer please”

“He arrived with the reinforcements”, said Rost. “HQ thought we would need him in the first lines”

“Hope he doesn't deem us worthy of his bolter's attention”, said Zor with a grimace.

They kept silent for the rest of the journey. They joined the other Chimeras and headed towards Rocky Gorge with only the sound of roaring engines and rain keeping them company.

“Look, rocks”, said Zor suddenly. Everyone looked out of the slots and could see rock hills looming over them. They were passing a tiny passage between two rock hills wide enough to fit three Chimeras one near the other.

“We are passing Rocky Gorge”, said Sergeant Rost.

“This is a good place for an ambush”, said Lant thoughtfully.

“That's why the Basilisks bombarded the place before we arrived”, countered Bann.

“Whatever happens, we have our orders and that's that”, said the Sergeant putting an end to the small talk.

The Chimera stopped several hundred meters from the Gorge. The squad got out and took positions. They could see that the other squads did the same, watching towards the enemy lines while waiting for the rest to pass.

   “What now Sarge?”, asked Olen.

“Now we wait for enemy movement”, replied the Sergeant. “Keep your eyes open men. If anything moves, shoot it.”

Before he could finish, the sound of lasgun fire sounded from their right. In the night they could see flashes coming from the right flank of the vanguard.

   “They are here!”, cried Zor.

“Steady men! Wait them to come to us!”, cautioned Rost.

“I see them!”, cried Bann while firing his lasgun to the darkness.

“Where?”, asked Olen. He couldn't see anything in the blasted darkness and rain. Not even shadowy figures moving. Hell, I can barely see my comrades!, thought Olen.

“I see them too! In the hills!”, said Dom, arming his rocket launcher.

“I can't see anyone!”, said Zor. “Are you sure they are there?”
Before Dom could reply, several dozen enemy lasguns firing answered for him. Every squad member took cover as best as they could.

As the volley ceased, Sergeant Rost crouched behind the rock he had took cover and aimed his lasgun towards the hills.

“Fire at will!”, he ordered before opening fire.

The troopers hurried to follow the Sergeants example. All of them opened fire at the enemy. The combined bright red lights of the lasguns and the blue bolts of Falen's plasma gun were followed by an explosion by Dom's rocket which lit the hill. In the light they could see for a second several dozen figures, some of them disintegrating by the explosion.

“Nice shot!”, said Tach to Dom. “That will make them think twice....”. An enemy shot in the head made him stop mid sentence.

   “They got Tach!”, cried Dom.

“We'll make them pay for it!”, cried Olen.

The sound of several explosions behind them sounded in the night, well above the noise of the rain and the ongoing firefight. The sound was followed by strong quakes that made the soldiers lose balance and fall down.

“What the....”, said Zor before dying instantly by a stray bullet. Before the quakes he was rushing towards another cover and he fell midways, in the open. Emperor, let me have better luck than him, prayed Olen.

“That came from the Gorge.”, said Falen. “That's not right...”

“Argian, request update!”, barked the Sergeant to the vox-operator.

“Right away Sir”, replied Argian, while tampering with the controls of his vox-unit. “2nd Squad, 52nd Platoon, 27th Draxian Regiment, requesting update.”, he said to the vox hailer.

He stood still for several minutes, listening in the several reports coming through. In the meanwhile, the firefight had resumed, more intense than before. The squad had found cover in a small rocky hill several metres away from their initial deployment and managed to stay in cover while shooting back at the enemy.

“Bad news, Sarge”, said Argian finally.

“What happened? Don't keep us waiting!”, barked Corporal Bann.

“The Gorge has been closed. The opening in the enemy lines was a trap lure us in. As were the enemy on the hills. They were there to get our attention away from the opening behind us and blow it. Only the vanguard managed to pass the Gorge. The rest of the force is behind the avallanche of rocks created by the explosions. There will be no reinforcements. We are alone.”

"Steel Rain this is Hitman, requesting update."
